Harry Hamlin Told Lisa Rinna 'You Can't Do This' When She Agreed To Join RHOBH Cast, Says He Has 'A Divorce Lawyer On Speed Dial'
Harry Hamlin was not happy when his wife, Lisa Rinna , agreed to join the cast of the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills in 2014. The 68-year-old actor recently revealed that he was worried about the effect the show would have on his marriage because “everybody who does that show gets divorced.”
While speaking with the Daily Beast , Hamlin said that he warned his wife when she signed on to RHOBH by telling her, “I have my divorce lawyer on speed dial.” He added that he still does five years later.
“I said to Lisa, ‘You can’t do this. Everybody who does that show gets divorced. It’s a horrible, horrible thing, to do that show,’” said Hamlin.
Hamlin’s marriage to Rinna is his third, as he was previously married to Nicolette Sheridan and Laura Johnson. He joked that he has brought his divorce lawyer so much business that they “send Christmas cards to each other every year.”
Surprisingly, it was former Real Housewives of New York star Bethenny Frankel who convinced Hamlin that RHOBH would be a good move for Rinna. Frankel became a self-made millionaire by negotiating a smart contract with Bravo that allowed her to advertise her Skinnygirl brand on the show.
Hamlin said that Frankel convinced him from a branding point of view that RHOBH would be a good thing for Rinna, and it was at that point he became open to doing the show on his own terms.
Hamlin - who shares daughters Delilah, 21, and Amelia, 18, with Rinna - explained that Bravo producers didn’t want to cast Rinna unless he agreed to appear on RHOBH with her. He said that the husbands have the same obligations as the wives, and they want the guys to show up and be involved.
“I said I wasn’t going to do that. So, we concocted a way to get around it,” revealed Hamlin.
After 22 years of marriage, Hamlin says he has seen Rinna get involved in a number of projects - from soap operas to clothing lines - and whatever it is, she figures out how to do it perfectly and makes the best out of every situation.
“We listen to each other. Really listen to each other,” said Hamlin. “She’s smart. She’s the smartest person I have ever met. She’s smart as a whip. Our favorite thing is to hang out.”
Harry Hamlin told Us Weekly earlier this year that “when you get married, you get married.” And, his relationship with Lisa Rinna is “very functional,” and they respect each other and let each other be instead of being a “helicopter husband and wife.”
New episodes of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills will return to Bravo in 2020.
