Tyler Perry Responds To Critics Who Don't Like His Writing -- Opinions Are Split
Tyler Perry has become a billionaire in the past year. Much to critics chagrin, he has a loyal audience that he will continue to cater to.
After Perry revealed that he writes every script -- from his movies to his series -- people have given their opinion about it. Some feel that that's the reason why his characters don't develop much while others think that he knows what works for him.
Perry would agree with the latter. He recently stated in an interview that the people who don't like his work aren't the people who are his target audience.
He explained to Variety: 'When I hear that kind of stuff, I’m thinking, ‘Are y’all looking at the ratings? Do you understand that the audience is in love with this?' Because if you’re complaining about my writing, you’re not the audience. My audience loves the way that it’s done and the way the stories are told. And from the beginning, it’s always been about being true to them.'
He doesn't focus on the negativity but is definitely open to constructive criticism.
'I never see a lot of it, but if it does get to me, I look for truth in it. There’s a lot of it that’s just vitriolic; that’s just ‘I’m going to hate on him because he’s Tyler Perry .’ I get that. But when there’s truth in the criticism, like, ‘Why did he do this, this and this?’ I go, ‘Hmm, let me think about that.’'
After The Neighborhood Talk reposted the clip, commentators were once again split.
'No Tyler...you’re feeding your audience garbage Material and you’re gaslighting them. You have yet to grow as an artist, it’s the same ol story each and every time! Your “audience” deserve better. And you owe it to yourself to create better films, you need to take a masterclass in filmmaking. The nucleus of the criticism is you refuse to grow!' slammed one.
'He refuses to try to evolve. But I guess why would he....his audience has made him a billionaire,' added another.
'Say what you want... but every Tyler Perry movie is literally speaking to someone. Somebody going through the exact same thing he be having in his movies,' one said.
While this follower added: 'Y’all stay clowning but be missing out on some good s***.'
Whatever Tyler has done so far has definitely gotten him a long way.
