Richard Madden On MCU's First Gay Character: It's ‘Hugely Important’
Richard Madden is super excited about the history-making film he’s part of – The Eternals! The reason why the upcoming movie is so special is that it features the very first openly gay character in the MCU!
The actor was in attendance at the Year Awards and while there, he chatted with ET about the project that is a huge step for onscreen representation in Hollywood.
Taking about the decision to give a crucial role to someone from the LGBTQ community, Madden said: ‘I think it's hugely important, just the cast is so diverse. I'm a white male actor and not in the majority of this cast. I'm the minority, which is important in terms of diversity in filmmaking. I think Marvel are really at the forefront of that.’
The addition to the cast of the first openly gay character in a Marvel movie was made official by the president of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, while on GMA last week.
At the time, he shared about the character that ‘He's married, he's got a family, and that is just part of who he is.’
For now, these are the only details about the character that have been made public.
Furthermore, fans of Game of Thrones will also be excited to watch this movie since it reunites two actors from the popular series.
Madden and Kit Harington, who portrayed Robb Stark and Jon Snow on Game of Thrones are both set to play characters on The Eternals.
About joining forces again, Madden told ET that he is ‘Thrilled to work with Kit again. Thrilled to work with Gemma Chan and Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek and the whole cast, [an] outstanding bunch of actors.’
