Halle Berry Gets Mixed Reaction For This Apology
After being hit with major backlash, actress Halle Berry has issued an apology to the LGBTQ community after she announced her intentions to play a transgender man in an upcoming film.
Berry was bashed after she took part in an interview, and she spoke about the role where she misgendered her character.
After being criticized for her comments, she announced that she is no longer taking the role.
Berry apologized by saying: "As a cisgender woman, I now understand that I should not have considered this role and that the transgender community should undeniably have the opportunity to tell their own stories."
She added: "I am grateful for the guidance and critical conversation over the past few days, and I will continue to listen, educate, and learn from this mistake."
LGBTQ advocacy group GLAAD responded by: "Other powerful people should do the same. A good place to start is by watching @Disclosure_Doc to learn about trans representation in media."
One fan said: "Imagine hating on an actor for doing their job. Why did she issue an apology..stand firm on your beliefs..money can't buy everything."
Another commenter wrote: "This generation is too sensitive. It ruins everything. That's her prerogative, and she doesn't owe anyone an apology... we don't even know what happened."
A third backer stated: "Great!👏🏾 Keep that same energy Halle when you're given roles meant for Dark skin women! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Was she supposed to play a trans and then backed out? I would think that the role would be given to a trans woman anyway- they do exist."
A fourth person chimed in: "Sometimes people should respect other people's choices regardless cause she's just giving the role away to someone else who would appreciate the role and loves and cares and stands up for the 🏳️🌈 LGBTQ community."
A fifth comment read: "Okay, I really don't see an issue here for the simple fact that they have to do what they feel comfortable doing like come on now y'all just making a big deal out of nothing at this point. It has been celebrities that have hopped out of rolls because of many different reasons. Y'all will not do a job that y'all are not comfortable with doing it, so why do you expect them to do a job and be uncomfortable? She does not need to apologize; she did nothing wrong."
This followerer wrote: "Didn't she play a drug addict, superhero, a ghetto female in BAPS? WHY NOT A TRANSGENDER 😏She didn't have a problem with her son walking in heels. 👌 Halle."
Is Berry right to decline the role?
