Tormund Giantsbane’s fate has finally been revealed. The new trailer for Season 8 of Game of Thrones confirmed that Tormund (Kristofer Hivju) made it out alive after the Night King busted through the Wall in the Season 7 finale. With the premiere only a few weeks away, Hivju talked a little more about his character’s storyline in the final season.
Hivju revealed that he went to great lengths to keep hidden while filming Season 8. Given how little we knew prior to the trailer, the actor did a great job staying under the radar. In fact, if the trailer had not revealed his character’s fate, there was a real potential that Season 8 could have kicked off with Tormund six feet under.

In his interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hivju said that he hopes that fans will be delighted that Tormund is still alive for the final run. He also revealed that he never understood the full impact of the show until he watched an episode with fans at a bar. The Game of Thrones star said the experience was like watching a sporting event.
“It was the episode where [Rory McCann’s character, the Hound, who was presumed dead for a time] came back, and there was this roar. I’m going for that,” he shared.
Hivju, unfortunately, did not reveal anything about his character’s journey this season, which he is still keeping a secret. The actor has played Tormund since the third season and has become an important ally and friend to Jon Snow (Kit Harington).
Tormund also has a massive crush on Gwendoline Christie’s Brienne of Tarth, and fans can’t wait to see them possibly reunite this season.

While Hivju was mum on details, he did reveal some information about Tormund’s state of mind this season. With the White Walkers threatening all the people of Westeros, Hivju explained how the biggest thing Tormund desires is a sense of closure.
Season 8 of Game of Thrones is set to premiere April 14 on HBO.
