Why is Princess Diana’s engagement ring on Kate Middleton’s finger? After the beloved royal passed away in 1997, her sons, William and Harry, had the opportunity – at her request – to pick pieces of jewelry from their mom’s personal collection so they could have something to remember her by. Originally, Prince Harry was the one who chose Diana’s blue engagement ring, so how did it end up with Middleton?
“I would like you to allocate all my jewelry to the share to be held by my sons, so that their wives may, in due course, have it or use it. I leave the exact division of the jewelry to your discretion,” wrote Diana before she died.

In the new Amazon Prime documentary The Diana Story, her butler Paul Burrell tells the story of what went down when the young princes visited Kensington Palace shortly after Diana’s tragic death and were sorting through their mom’s jewelry. It all started with William picking out Diana’s Cartier watch.
“I’d like mummy’s Cartier watch, the one that Grandpa Spencer gave to her for her 21st birthday,” Burrell remembers 15-year-old William saying at the time.
And, 12-year-old Harry had a reason for why the sapphire engagement ring caught his eye.
“I remember when I held mummy’s hand when I was a small boy, and that ring always hurt me because it was so big,” Burrell remembers Harry saying.
However, according to Cosmopolitan, when the time came for William to propose to Kate, Harry gave the ring to his big brother because he thought he should have it. Harry told William that it would be fitting for Middleton to wear Diana’s ring because one day it will sit on the throne of England.
Once Harry gave the ring to William, he reportedly carried it around for three weeks before popping the question to Middleton while they were on vacation in Mount Kenya in October 2010.
