A young man from Illinois declared himself guilty of hacking the iCloud account of several celebrities and leaking their indecent photos online. Edward Majerczyk was accused of a felony count because of unauthorized access to one computer that was protected. He did in order to obtain information and on Tuesday he pleaded guilty in front of the Chicago federal court.
The court documents did not show Majerczyk’s victims’ names, but as we know, this incident affected Jennifer Lawrence, Kirsten Dunst, Kate Upton and the soccer player Hope Solo. Many other actresses have talked about the dissemination of nude photos of them.
The defendant claimed that he targeted only female celebrities and that he wanted to download sensitive images. The lawyer said that there is no evidence that the accused tried to disseminate or sell the images. The culprit himself said that he wanted them for his own enjoyment and satisfaction.
The famous incident which was nicknamed “Celebgate” leaked more than 500 photos taken from the iCloud accounts of various celebrities. Many of the images were infact nude photos and were posted on a 4chan forum. After that they found their way to Imgur and Reddit.
According to the investigators, Lawrence was “visibly shaken” by this incident. An FBI agent declared that she was really distraught and he had to stop the interview because her emotional state was quite fragile regarding the information they discussed. Moreover, she even had an anxiety attack.
In an interview for Vanity Fair which she gave back in 2014, Jennifer Lawrence said that the leak is in fact a “Sex crime”. She declared that she was so afraid and that she didn’t know whether and how will this affect her career. Moreover, she defended herself saying that just because she’s a public person it doesn’t mean that people have to disrespect her privacy.
The sentencing for Majerczyk will take place on January 10.
