Daytime fan favorite Tyler Christopher has opened up regarding the real reason he decided to exit Days of Our Lives, as well as his possible return to General Hospital.
Fans were left shocked when Christopher suddenly departed the role of Stefan DiMera on DOOL last fall. He had finally found his stride and fans were accepting him in the role when it was announced he was taking a leave of absence. The actor was even nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award.
General Hospital alum and Christopher’s friend, Brandon Barash, took over the part. It was supposed to be a temporary recast but turned into a permanent replacement.
Thank you all for the kind farewell’s. My time on @daysofourlives was notning short of pure fun. Such a great group of people to work for and be around every day. Please welcome @BrandonBarash into the roll. Such a solid actor and an even better person. #nbcdays #stefandimera

Now the hunky actor is finally sharing with fans what personal reasons led to his decision to leave the NBC soap opera. Christopher spoke with Soaps In Depth revealing his family was one primary reason for his exit. His family is currently living in Indiana near his wife Brienne Pedigo’s extended family. The back and forth took a toll on his two kids, Greyson and Boheme.
His kids weren’t the only ones to suffer from the long-distance living. It began to take its toll on Christopher, who has long struggled with alcohol addiction.
“Alcohol addiction is something I’ve battled since I was a teenager. I’ve had some amazing success with it and some really awful failures,” he shared with SID.
Last fall Christopher realized he needed some time to focus on his family and address some issues in his life. He did not say he was struggling with his addiction again but did keep referencing it is a daily battle for him.

The actor did not go into detail about his issues but instead made it clear he needed a break from daytime. However, he is also adamant that he is not gone from the soap opera world forever.
When asked about returning to GH as Nikolas Cassadine, Christopher was open to it. He has not spoken to anyone at the ABC show yet, but fans have been clamoring for him to come back. They miss the character of Nikolas, as his “death” has left several unanswered questions for fans.
Tyler Christopher left DOOL for personal reasons to focus on family and some underlying personal issues. He has not indicated when he will return to daytime, but that has not stopped fans from continuing to blast GH executives to bring him back to Port Charles. Perhaps their call will be heard sooner rather than later but only once Christopher as addressed all of his personal issues.
