HBO is hoping to revive True Detective by bringing on Moonlight star Mahershala Ali for Season 3. The network just released a teaser trailer for the upcoming season, offering fans a first look at Ali in action as Wayne Hays, a Northwest Arkansas detective. Here’s everything we know about the new season of True Detective.
After a popular debut season starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, the series slumped in its sophomore year, despite having an all-star cast of Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell. HBO hopes the series will bounce back in Season 3, and adding Ali to the cast is certainly a move in the right direction.
According to USA Today, the 3rd season of True Detective is set in the Ozarks and follows Hays (Ali) as he tries to solve a crime that spans several years. The trailer does not offer anything concrete as far as the storyline is concerned, but it does show Ali in action as he tries to make sense of what’s going on around him.
“My job… there’s no certainty,” Ali’s character admits in the clip. “…I want to know the whole story.”
Based on the trailer, it looks like the show is returning to a similar tone and feel as the 1st season, which is exciting. There’s no telling if the show will see a bump in ratings as a result, but returning to its roots is a good move.
True Detective Season 2 was different but not horrible by any means. It's hard for anyone to follow up the amazing performance Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson gave in Season 1. Can’t wait to see what Mahershala Ali has in store for us in Season 3. #TrueDetective

The only downside is that McConaughey and Harrelson will not be back in action since the series is an anthology.
Apart from Ali, Season 3 will feature Carmen Ajogo and Stephen Dorff in supporting roles. Ray Fisher, who starred in Justice League, is playing the part of Hays’ son.
HBO has not announced an official premiere date for the new season of True Detective, but the show is expected to air sometime in January.
