Too Little Too Late? Terry Crews Explains Why He Apologized To Gabrielle Union For Not Having Her Back
Terry Crews disappointed many Black women when he refused to have Gabrielle Union’s back when it came to her discrimination claims about her experience on America’s Got Talent. Now, he is apologizing for the way his actions made his biggest supporters feel.
Terry revealed that a Hollywood bigwig sexually assaulted him. After many people, especially men, ridiculed him for sharing his story, Black women rallied behind the actor and encouraged him to share his story and press charges although it was to no avail.
He later expressed his gratitude on Watch What Happens Live: ‘I have to say this: the people that surprised me the most were Black women. All my support came from Black women, straight up. And that’s kind of wild. It shocked me. It shocked my family.’
This is why Black women especially were disappointed in him when he didn’t stick up for Gabrielle when she first told her story about the toxic work environment that she experienced on AGT.
While they understand that he was speaking on his experience in January, many felt that he could have said something in support of Union’s claims considering she also applauded him for telling his story.
After receiving the criticism, he did apologize to Union.
‘@itsgabrielleu, I want you to know it was never my intention to invalidate your experience – but that is what I did. I apologize. You have been through a lot in this business, and with that I empathize with the struggle toward fairness and equality in the workplace.’
He is now explaining why he said he’s sorry.
‘I had to understand that I’m looking at this thing from a lens of male privilege. Where men and women are treated differently on sets. When you’re wrong, you’ve got to just say, ‘Hey, I apologize, I’m sorry. Let me get back in here, and let’s do this right.” he told ET Online.
This comes after Terry made confusing statements on ‘Black supremacy.’
