The runaway hit This is Us has been teasing the heartbreaking death of the near-perfect patriarchal figure Jack Pearson for an entire season. Many fans believed the cause of Jack’s demise was going to be revealed at the close of the first season but much to their surprise, more clues were offered with no real definitive answer.
The structural landscape of the show is such that flashbacks are an important tool used to tell a more complete story about a family and the inner workings of their hangups, shortcomings, gifts, relationships, and tragedies. Milo Ventimiglia, who plays Jack, has always been upfront about what an honor it is to play such a beloved character.
Jack is the type of character that so many feel comforted by and in. So much so that Ventimiglia is used to giving out hugs to fans he runs into around the emotional retching of the show. A fact that seems impossible now but Ventimiglia wasn’t the first choice to play Jack, but his audition won over creators. Now, there’s no other person that could possibly come close as Ventimiglia is Jack.
Ventimiglia recently revealed that the incessant wait regarding how Jack does pass away will be revealed to viewers very soon. Though faithful viewers found out that Jack dies in the middle of the first season, Ventimiglia has known since the very beginning.
He knows that the revelation will be devasting for fans and that it will be one of the most emotionally wrenching moments in the show’s history. That claim is actually saying quite a lot considering every single episode has a way of really tugging heartstrings. Quite the feat.
Ventimiglia has also gone on to say that no one he’s heard or seen has correctly guessed what Jack’s cause of death is at this point. There were several clues and misdirects in the first season regarding what may have contributed or lead to his death but no one has gotten the precise guess right. Not yet.
It is sure to be a tear and tissue filled episode for the millions of viewers who have developed such an intense love for the show.
