NBC’s hit drama This Is Us recently returned for season 2, and the premiere episode revealed another piece of the “how did Jack die?” puzzle. With the last scene of the episode showing their burned-out house, did it imply that is how the Pearson family loses their dad?
Creator Dan Fogelman recently said told Entertainment Weekly that the final scene of the premiere episode revealed a lot of clues about the day Jack dies, and that was the plan from day one; but, it’s not necessarily the fire that does him in.
When we see Rebecca drive up to the burned down house, there are things in the back seat that presumably belong to Jack, but they aren’t burned.
“I can’t give away a lot,” Fogelman said. “But what I can say is: What you’re watching is something that happened on that night. So, every single thing you’re seeing — when we eventually get to that night, and it will be somewhere in this season — will be from what you saw the last minute and a half of the show.”
A critic at TVLine says that the mystery surrounding Jack’s death, with all of the time jumping, is starting to feel like How I Met Your Mother’s “who’s the mother? mystery,” but not “in a good way.”
However, the show will continue to reveal clues about Jack’s death, and Fogelman promises that viewers will find out everything before the second season finale.
Fans also noticed that during that last scene Rebecca is wearing a Steelers jersey, which could mean the couple reconciled before Jack’s death. At the end of season one, the Pearson’s separated after Jack gets into a fight with Rebecca’s ex before she is set to sing at a concert with her band.
In the premiere, Rebecca finds her husband and says that he needs to come home so the two can work through their issues. But, Jack reveals to his wife that he is an alcoholic and has been “drunk for weeks,” and tells her he can’t come home until he fixes his problem.
Rebecca doesn’t accept this solution and tells him to get in the car so that they can face his problem together as husband and wife.
This Is Us airs on Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. on NBC.
