Season 9 of The Walking Dead will be Andrew Lincoln’s last as Rick Grimes. The cast and crew have already revealed their thoughts about saying farewell to Lincoln, and now we finally know how the show will handle his character’s end.
Angela Kang, the show’s new showrunner, recently talked about how Rick’s final moments on the show. Kang revealed that they wanted to pay respect to Rick because of his importance to the series. Rick has been the main character on the show for the past 9 seasons, so Kang wanted to make sure they ended his journey in a meaningful way. She didn’t say how Rick’s story will end, but it sounds like
While it’s great to see the show honor Rick, Kang has plans to keep it going long after Lincoln is gone. According to Entertainment Weekly, Kang opened up about her plans to shift the perspective moving forward. This includes focusing more on Rick’s group and how they keep moving forward without their fearless leader.
“It started with him, it’s always been a story about this group of people that have each other’s backs, that help each other survive,” Kang explained.
Kang is not worried about the show’s future after Lincoln is gone, mostly because the remaining cast members are ready to step up. In fact, Kang is certain that the show’s stars will continue the positive atmosphere Lincoln has cultivated on set all of these years. Although the cast members are ready to pick up the slack, it wasn’t easy saying goodbye to someone they’ve worked with for 9 years.
As far as Lincoln is concerned, the actor recently opened up about his decision to leave the show. After announcing his departure at Comic-Con last month, Lincoln revealed that he left the series so that he could spend more time with his family.
Andrew Lincoln has two small children and lives in England, so working in the states has gotten trickier as they get older. With his kids growing up, Lincoln felt like it was time to leave the series behind and focus more on his family life.
Lincoln is not the only Walking Dead star who will be taking a break after Season 9. Lauren Cohen will be absent for a short time while she finishes filming for Whisky Cavalier. She is not, however, leaving the series for good and will be back as Maggie in the near future.
Season 9 of The Walking Dead premieres Oct. 7 on AMC.
