Fans were thrilled when they heard The Walking Dead had cast former Sons of Anarchy star Ryan Hurst to play Beta, the second in command of the group, the Whisperers. But fans aren’t the only ones excited to bring Hurst on board.
Executive producer Greg Nicotero recently opened up about the addition and praised showrunner Angela Kang for her bringing together such an amazing cast this season.

Nicotero called Kang’s casting in Season 9 “impeccable.” The producer then teased that every new addition this season as “knocked it out of the park,” and that everyone is grateful to be a part of something special. He also revealed that he is a huge fan of the former Sons of Anarchy star and assured fans that he’s going to be great on The Walking Dead.
Given Hurst’s background and the villainous character he plays this season, we can’t wait to see him in action as Beta.
In the comics, Beta is the second in command of the Whisperers and a formidable foe to anyone he comes across. He follows the leader of the group, Alpha, who is being played by Samantha Morton. The Whisperers are famous for wearing zombie flesh so that they can walk around without having to worry about walkers eating them.

Hurst is not the only new addition to the show in Season 9. During Comic-Con in San Diego this year, the network revealed that Eleanor Matsuura from Into the Badlands will play Yumiko, while Dan Fogler from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is playing Luke. Former The 100 star Nadia Hilker was also cast to play the part of Magna.
Season 9 of The Walking Dead kicks off Oct. 7 on AMC. New episodes of the show’s spin-off, Fear the Walking Dead, air Sunday nights.
