The cast and the crew of The Voice had to make some major changes in order to finish out Season 18, but they were able to come through during the last few weeks of the season with remote episodes that eventually ended in the crowning of a winner.
On Tuesday, 41-year-old Todd Tilghman – a pastor from Meridian, Mississippi – became the winner of the NBC singing competition. He was part of Blake Shelton’s team, and the win marked the seventh time the country superstar has won a season. The last time he took home the prize was in Season 13 when Chloe Kohanski was named the winner.
For the final few episodes of the season, the coaches and contestants appeared remotely from their respective homes. The final contestants still managed to bring some amazing performances, and Tilghman ultimately won the at-home vote.
“When my name was called, I blacked out,” Tilghman told Shelton after his victory. The God’s Country singer said that Tilghman is every bit as talented as the other four finalists, and he thinks the thing that put him over the top was relatability.
Tilghman is the lead pastor at the Mississippi church where he grew up and he married his highschool sweetheart. The couple have three biological children of their own, and they grew their family via adoption. A community fundraiser put together $20,000 for the couple to bring home a daughter, and less than a year later the agency called and said they were looking for a home for their daughter’s biological sister.
An anonymous donation helped them adopt for a second time, and after a few more adoptions they are now the parents of eight children.
“He’s somebody everybody hopes they can meet one day — I’m not surprised … I wish I had a record label I could sign Todd to because I would make him a priority. There’s no excuses. It’s time. I want to support him in any way I can,” said Shelton.
Tilghman beat out four other contestants in the final episode to win The Voice. He topped fellow Shelton teammate Toneisha Harris, Nick Jonas’ Thunderstorm Artis, team Kelly Clarkson’s Micah Iverson, and John Legend’s contestant, CammWess.
Todd Tilghman says that he promised his wife and kids a trip to Disney World if he won, but now they are going to have to figure something else out due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
