Matt Smith has finally addressed the controversial pay gap between him and The Crown co-star Claire Foy. Here’s what he had to say!
As you may already know, it was exposed that the two actors were paid unequally amid the Time’s Up movement and people were definitely not happy!
After all, Clare Foy plays the titular Queen Elizabeth II on the show, while Smith plays Prince Phillip.
Shouldn’t the person playing the main character be paid more?
At the time, the Netflix show’s producers apologized to both actors and said they would fix the issue.
Now, in a new interview, Smith stated that he completely supports Foy and agrees with the critics.
‘Claire is one of my best friends, and I believe we should be paid equally and fairly, and there should be equality for all. I support her completely, and I am pleased that it was resolved and they made amends for it because that is what has needed to happen. Going forward, I believe we should all bear in mind that we need to strive to make this better and an even playing field for everyone involved — but not just in our industry, in all industries.’
Not too long ago, Foy stated that she does not think Smith is to blame for anything and believes the controversy is therefore pretty ‘odd.’
‘I know Matt feels the same that I do, that it is odd to find yourself at the center [of a story] that you did not particularly ask for,’ she shared.
Considering both actors have been replaced with older ones in order to depict the characters in another time period of their lives in the next season, will the wage gap return?
The answer is no! The show’s producers have made it very clear that going forward, ‘no one gets paid more than the queen!’
