With the annual award season now in full swing, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has now announced the nominees for next month's 89th Oscar ceremony. The musical La La Land leads the pack with 14 nominations, tying a record set by 1997's Titanic and 1950's All About Eve .

La La Land is nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Original Score, and Best Cinematography. Two songs from the musical are up for Best Song, "Audition" and "City of Stars." The film's stars, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, are nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress, respectively.

It's no surprise that La La Land is nominated in so many categories. Hollywood loves movies about itself and the film has been sweeping awards ceremonies for weeks. History was made at the Golden Globes earlier this month when La La Land won all seven categories in which it was nominated.

The science-fiction film Arrival was something of a surprise, garnering a whopping eight nominations. That's quite a feat for a genre film. Among the accolades, the film is up for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director, and even Best Picture.

The depressing Manchester by the Sea was also an Academy favorite with six nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor (Casey Affleck), Best Supporting Actress (Michelle Williams), and Best Supporting Actor (Lucas Hedges).

Star Mel Gibson is making something of a career comeback at this year's Oscars. His film Hacksaw Ridge  also received six nominations, including Best Picture and a Best Director nod for Gibson himself. The movie's star, Andrew Garfield, also received a Best Actor nomination.

The 89th annual Academy Awards ceremony will be hosted by comedian Jimmy Kimmel on February 26, 2017.
