In a new interview, Tessa Thompson confirmed that she’s bisexual, but didn’t dish on whether or not she was dating Janelle Monae. Tessa and Monae sparked romance rumors earlier in the year following the release of her music video, “Make Me Feel,” where the two almost kiss, as well as “Pynk,” where Thompson pops her head out of Monae’s pants.
During a chat with Net-A-Porter, Thomspon said, flat out, “I’m attracted to men and also to women.” According to the actress, she’s incredibly fortunate to come from the type of family where a discussion about it isn’t even needed; there’s no judgment.
In Thompson’s view, everyone should have the right to be themselves, without the fear of judgment, or retribution, at the hands of another less tolerant and less openminded person.
However, “so many people don’t,” the actress explained, so she feels as though she has a responsibility to help those who are less fortunate than herself.
Regarding her and Monae, Thompson said “we’re so close,” and they “vibrate on the same frequency.” She added that she’s fine with people speculating on the nature of their relationship. Afterall, it keeps the intrigue present and their names in the headlines.
This isn’t the first time they’ve talked about it either, as Monae spoke about it with Rolling Stone near the beginning of the year. The 32-year-old, Monae, insinuated to Rolling Stone in April 2018 that it takes a lot of courage and strength to be a “queer black woman.”
At first, she thought of herself as just bisexual, but she read a lot about pansexuality later on. She realized that she identified with that too. During a chat with the New York Times earlier in the year, Monae refused to delve into the nature of her relationship with Thompson.
While most people are infatuated with the possibility of their coupling, other on social media have accused them of being “needlessly pretentious” in their refusal to identify their sexuality and whether they’re an item or not.
