The last two years of American politics have certainly been strange, starting with Donald Trump’s campaign for the presidency, followed by his eventual – and shocking – win over Hillary Clinton. It was one of the biggest upsets in the history of presidential elections.
And it only continues to get stranger, with allegations that Russia had attempted to help Donald Trump win the 2016 election. However, perhaps the weirdest development thus far is the recent announcement made by Russian officials.
According to new reports, Steven Seagal, the action movie star, known for classics like Under Seige and the less classic, Exit Wounds, will be responsible for working with the Russian government on behalf of the United States.
On Saturday, Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the 66-year-old actor was the “special representative.” The actor will actively work toward strengthening ties between the two nations in “the humanitarian sphere.”
An Official Message from Steven Seagal My Dear Friends Today I am deeply humbled and honoured to have been appointed as a special representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry in charge of Russian and American Humanitarian ties. I have worked for many years trying to help good relations between Russia and America. I hope we can strive for peace, harmony and positive results in the world. I take this honour very seriously indeed and I once again thank you for your friendship, strength and support. Many blessings Steven Seagal
A statement released by the government branch stated he would also work “in the sphere of culture, public, and youth exchanges.” However, Putin and his government will not pay him. On Sunday, Seagal said he was “deeply humbled,” and that he took the honor “very seriously.”
Sources close to the actor explained today, “even though Seagal doesn’t have a great reputation in the United States, he actually does in other parts of the world. In Japan, he was the first westerner to be the head of an Aikido dojo, and he was the first to popularize the style in the United States.”
“People around certain parts of the world respect him as an actor, and has a legion of dedicated fans who love his movies.”
Interestingly, Vladimir Putin suggested Seagal for the role in 2013, and everyone supposedly laughed at him. An official for the United States government told BuzzFeed News in 2015 that everyone thought to themselves: “you’ve got to be kidding.”
Vladimir allowed for Seagal to become an official Russian citizen in 2016, and Steven was present for Putin’s swearing-in ceremony in May. Furthermore, the actor has come under fire for sexual misconduct by a number of different women, including Jenny McCarthy, Julianna Marguiles, and Portia De Rossi.
The Los Angeles County district attorneys Office is investigating the charges made by the women, including an incident where he supposedly raped an 18-year-old girl in 1993.
