Sophie Turner Shares Mental Health Struggle Admits To Thoughts Of Suicide
Sophie Turner is sharing her struggle with mental health, including how depression led her to thoughts of suicide as a teen.
While speaking with Dr. Phil in a podcast interview, the actress admitted that during what should have been a high-point in her life, Turner was plagued with thoughts of suicide. Four years after she started filming Game of Thrones , which made her a household name, she was struggling with depression.
At 17-years-old Turner appeared to have it all. She was beautiful, talented, and on one of the hottest TV shows around. However, as so many people know, looks can be deceiving, and that was the case for Joe Jonas' fiancé.
"It's weird. I say I wasn't very depressed when I was younger, but I used to think about suicide a lot when I was younger. I don't know why though. Maybe it's just a weird fascination I used to have, but yeah, I used to think about it. I don't think I ever would have gone through with it. I don't know," the now 23-year-old.
Turner endured a lot of public scrutiny at a young age because of the success of GOT . In a world where social media dominates and trolls feel they can say whatever comes to mind, it can be difficult for anyone to build self-confidence, even a famous starlet. Unfortunately, her story is all too real and all too common these days among young women.
"I would just believe it. I would say, ‘Yeah, I am spotty. I am fat. I am a bad actress.' I would just believe it. I would get the costume department to tighten my corset a lot. I just got very, very self-conscious," Turner explained.
Sophie Turner is not exempt from having self-doubt like the rest of us. The constant hate, shaming, and negativity caused the actress to become depressed. It got to the point where she lacked the motivation to do anything, even spend time with her closest friends.
Thankfully she got help, but she kept her therapy sessions to herself for a long time. It was only about a year ago that she opened up to her parents regarding her mental health struggles and how therapy has saved her life.
One person who has had a significant impact on improving her self-esteem is soon to be husband Jonas. The blonde beauty credits him for helping her love herself because he is reminding her daily of how much he loves her. Jonas sees the redeeming qualities in her that she could never understand.
"When someone tells you, they love you every day, it makes you really think about why that is, and I think that makes you love yourself a bit more. So yeah, I love myself," Turner stated
