Mark E Smith, the lead singer of the British post-punk band, The Fall, died at the age of 60 today, Wednesday, January 24th. Pam Van Damned, who served as the band’s manager, released a statement via Cherry Red Records where they announced his death.
They wrote that it was “with deep regret” that they have to announce the passing of Mark E Smith. Pam and her representatives said he passed away this morning at his home.
Moreover, they hope to release more details in an in-depth statement sometime soon. After the heartbreaking news, Pam and Mark’s family ask for respect for their privacy during this challenging time.

Mark formed the band back in 1976 with the original members, Tony Friel, Martin Brama, and Una Baines. Smith was the only member to stick around in the group and release more than thirty albums.
Marc Riley, who used to be in The Fall from 1978 until 1983, spoke about Mark’s death during an interview on BBC 6 Music. Riley said Smith taught him a lot about life and music.
Riley revealed that The Fall was always his favorite band, and they were his favorite rock group when he got kicked out too.
Brix Smith-Start, Smith’s ex-wife, took to Twitter today to commemorate the passing of Mark E Smith. In a tweet which we have for you above, Start said she would put out a formal statement tomorrow when she is more prepared to do so.
Mark was also married to Saffron Prior from 1991 until 1995 and is survived by his wife, Elenor Smith, whom he married back in 2001. Smith was also married to Saffron Prior from 1991 to 1995. Wife Elenor Smith survives him. The pair tied the knot in 2001.
