After her health scare, Shannen Doherty has a brand new perception of life. The actress was in attendance at the Stand Up to Cancer event at Barker Hanger in Santa Monica, and she talked to ET while there.
While she got pretty emotional opening up about her cancer diagnosis, Doherty revealed that it was a blessing in disguise as she became a better actor.
‘It’s the best time in the world for me to be an actor because I’m so in touch with every single emotion,’ she told the outlet.
Back in April of last year, Shannen announced that thankfully, her breast cancer was in remission.
Now, with tears in her eyes, the actress explained why she was getting so emotional.
‘It’s maybe a bit of fear, but it is also this overwhelming feeling of gratefulness and humility. And I think the humility is what knocks you on your feet most and brings forth these tears. It is also the fear that anybody else is going to go through it.’
Now that she is in remission, Shannen says that as cheesy as it may sound, she does have a brand new outlook on life.
‘I hate to be that person who goes, ‘Oh my God, the sky’s so blue all of a sudden.’ But you truly start noticing more things around you, and appreciating everything.’
The Charmed star previously underwent a mastectomy and explained that she needed to gain weight for the procedure.
She shared with ET that now, ‘I’m having a bit of a hard time getting [all the extra weight] off. It was for the particular surgery I chose. I did not have any extra skin, so I had to gain some weight to stretch the skin for my surgery.’
‘[The plastic surgeon] said 7 pounds would be good, but then I have always been kind of an overachiever. And I have always really wanted to please the teacher, so I went 10. I was like, ‘OK, you need 7? I will give you 10. I will be that girl for you.’ But, in the long run, what is a little extra weight compared to my health and having great reconstruction.’
