We have learned that the tennis champion has decided to withdraw from the French Open! ESPN was the first to report that, despite the fact that Serena Williams was expected to play a fourth-round match against none other than Maria Sharapova today, she has suffered a chest muscle injury that forced Williams to pull out of the tournament!
The sportswoman held a press conference during which she announced her withdrawal, admitting that ‘It’s extremely disappointing.’
However, she added that, at the same time ‘I made a promise to myself and to my coach and my team that if I am not at least 60 percent or 50 percent, then I probably should not play. The fact that I physically cannot serve at all is a good indication that maybe I should go back to the drawing board and stay positive. And try to get better and not get it to a point where it could be a lot worse.’
She also took to social media to express her gratitude towards her many fans.
‘You always live to fight for another chance. I have done a lot of fighting, and this is just the beginning. Thank you a lot for the support. I love you,’ Serena wrote on her Instagram.
On the bright side, she will now have more free time to spend with her baby girl.
In March, Williams confessed to ET that ever since she returned to tennis after welcoming her, she has been feeling mom guilt.
‘I’ve always wanted to be a mom, but I never seemed to have time with my career. I am never a day without Olympia. She is my priority and every day I need to be home with her. I don’t want to miss any moments with her.’
