This is a big milestone, but it turns out that Serena Williams is not celebrating baby Olympia’s first birthday. The baby girl is turning one on Saturday, and the tennis champion and her hubby Alexis Ohanian have a very good reason they’re not throwing a party.
She explained while at a press conference about the U.S. Open that the decision has to do with their religious beliefs.
‘Olympia doesn’t celebrate birthdays. We’re Jehovah’s Witnesses, so we don’t do that,’ the mother of one explained.
The Christian denomination is based on different beliefs from the mainstream religion.
That being said, Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t celebrate birthdays, Easter, Christmas and other holidays.
But even though it seems like Olympia will be growing up without knowing the meaning of having a birthday party, she gets celebrated every day by her parents who cannot stop posting cute pics of her on social media.
Last month, Serena opened up about feeling unfit as a mother.
She explained that she pulled out of the Rogers Cup tournament because ‘mostly, I felt like I was not a good mom.’
She went on to say that ‘I read articles that said postpartum emotions can last up to three years if not dealt with. I like communication the best. Talking things through with my mother, my sisters, friends let me know my feelings are totally normal. It is totally normal to feel like I am not doing enough for my baby. We’ve all been there. I work a lot, I train, and I am trying to be the best athlete I can be.’
‘However, that means that although I have been with her every day of her life, I am not around as much as I’d like to be. Most of you moms deal with the same thing. Whether stay-at-home or working, finding that balance with kids is a true art. You are the true heroes.’
