Back in the ‘90s, it is safe to say that the regretted Selena Quintanilla and Chris Perez were relationship goals. As fans may remember, the two met when they both became members of Los Dinos in Corpus Christi, Texas. In 1992, Selena and Chris eloped!
Sadly, their love was cut short by the tragedy that was the singer’s death at the age of only 23 in 1995.
Now, the husband opened up about their romance, saying: ‘It is one of those bittersweet things, but it is amazing that she is still in people’s minds. We got to live a fast and crazy life as kids. I believe I was 20 when we first started getting serious with each other.’
Perez revealed what came to mind when he first saw Selena.
‘Beautiful and talented. I am a shy person by nature, and there was just something about her that she was able to pull me out.’
Referring to the fact that ever since her untimely passing Selena has become a cultural icon, Perez said: ‘I am proud of her. Proud of everything that she has been able to accomplish.’
He went on: ‘I remember when we first got married. We were new to Los Angeles, and I remember walking around, looking at the stars [on the Hollywood Walk of Fame] and not once did we even think it was possible that something like this could happen.’
When asked what helped him cope with his wife’s death, Perez explained that it was ‘Music — always has been, always will be.’
But, naturally, some of her songs bring back pain.
‘It’s a tricky thing because sometimes you do not want to hear it, it is going to bring you down. There are other days where you just need to hear it, and you are smiling just remembering a lot of the good stuff. It is a weird kind of balance. If I am at a restaurant having dinner and they are playing music and then all of a sudden it is [one of] her song[s] — if I am not prepared for it, that can be a little hard.’
