The superstar has opened up about her life-saving kidney transplant, admitting that without her friend Francia Raísa, she would most probably be dead today. In a very emotional teaser for her Today interview with Savannah Guthrie, the 25-year-old Gomez talked about the procedure.
‘My kidneys were done. That was it, and I did not want to ask a single person in my life. And she volunteered and did it,’ Selena says.
As fans undoubtedly know, the performer has been battling lupus for the past couple of years and had no choice but undergo surgery due to some complications.
Previously, Selena’s uncle also revealed that she was really sick and needed medical help.
As part of her treatment, the star underwent chemotherapy as well, but without any results – the autoimmune disease continued to affect her kidneys.
Even though Gomez did not want to burden anyone close to her by asking them to save her life, Francia simply volunteered to do it by being her kidney donor.
Following the procedure, Selena took to social media to share a photo featuring her and her friend holding hands while lying in their hospital beds.
‘She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed,’ Gomez captioned the pic.
Despite the fact that it was a heroic gesture, sources revealed that they were not surprised Francia donated her kidney to Selena because they are ‘just that close!’
