Sarah Hyland Gets Real About Living With Chronic Illness
Modern Family star Sarah Hyland is getting candid about living with a chronic illness.
The newly-engaged actress knows first-hand what it is like to have your life revolve around being ill. Hyland was born with kidney dysplasia, which is a disease where the kidneys don't fully develop in the womb.
It has been seven years since her first kidney transplant. Hyland's father donated one of his kidneys in 2012. Unfortunately, four years later the brunette beauty learned the kidney was failing.
For the next year, she underwent dialysis to prepare Hyland for her second kidney transplant. The actress revealed her Modern Family costars would wear surgical masks to help protect her fragile immune system.
Immunosuppressants caused several reactions to her body, including severe weight loss and a red swollen face. Hyland was publicly criticized for her appearance, but in the end, her second transplant was successful.
Ironically while preparing her second kidney transplant, the actress met and fell in love with her fiancé, Wells Adams. Although she will live with her illness forever and a setback can happen at any time, thanks to Adams, she is looking forward to her future.
She wants to remind people not to let the frustration of living with a chronic illness be all-consuming.
"People who have chronic illness should take the time to say, This isn't fair. Take a moment to cry and be like 'F you' to whomever did this to me. It's okay to feel angry, just don't let it be all-consuming," the 28-year-old said to People magazine.
Hyland is finally starting to feel more comfortable speaking out about her chronic illness. In the past, she has shied away from speaking out about her struggles. The decision caused a lot of speculation and criticism from people.
"I have realized the benefits of being able to talk about it. Not just for on a mental level for myself, but so that others don't feel so alone," the actress stated.
Life has certainly thrown Sarah Hyland some curveballs thanks to her chronic illness. However, she knows she is blessed too and is focused on the good things.
Modern Family has had a successful run and earned her a thriving acting career. She is planning a wedding to the man of her dreams and has a vast support system to help her during the tough times.
