Sarah Hyland has starred on Modern Family for 11 seasons as Phil and Claire Dunphy’s oldest daughter Haley, but fans have noticed in the final season that Hyland hasn’t appeared in many episodes. After receiving questions about her absence on social media, Hyland responded with an explanation.

“Apparently I’ve been busy with the twins,” Hyland tweeted, along with a shrugging emoji.

As fans know, Haley gave birth to her twins Poppy and George in the Season 10 finale. And, during the 11th and final season, Haley’s story lines have been centered around her life as a newlywed and new mom. Haley is married to her high school sweetheart Dylan Marshall (Reid Ewing), and they moved into Phil and Claire’s house while they figure out the whole parenting thing.

Hyland has been so disconnected from this season’s other story lines that she actually had no idea they killed off her TV grandpa - played by Fred Willard - until she watched the most recent episode with millions of Modern Family fans when it aired on ABC.

“I don’t read scripts of episodes of Modern Family that I’m not in, so I just found out that my grandpa’s dead along with all of you,” the 29-year-old said on her Instagram Story. “I still feel special.”

Hyland later offered an apology for spoiling the episode for her fans who didn’t watch the episode live, and she explained that she was “caught off-guard” by the story line. She then joked that as his granddaughter, she should have been invited to his funeral.

In the final scene of the episode, Phil (Ty Burrell) gives an emotional eulogy to honor his father, but Haley wasn’t in the scene. Those in attendance included Claire (Julie Bowen), Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), Cameron (Eric Stonestreet), and Gloria (Sofia Vergara).

Since its debut in 2009, Modern Family has won five Emmys for outstanding comedy series. New episodes air Wednesday nights on ABC. And, the network has announced that the series finale will air on April 8th.

Sarah Hyland says that the thing she will miss the most when the show ends is the amazing crew and cast. Hyland says she loves the cast and they are very special people.
