On Monday, June 4th, 2018, Sara Gilbert co-host and creator of the daytime show The Talk discussed ABC’s decision to cancel Roseanne Barr’s series, Roseanne. Sara Gilbert played Roseanne’s and Dan Connor’s middle child Darlene since the show’s onset in 1984. The Roseanne reboot was suddenly taken off the air after Barr tweeted comments comparing former Obama aide Valerie Jarrett to a cross between the Muslim Brotherhood and Planet of the Apes.
The nation quickly took offense at the remarks and calls for Roseanne’s show to end were immediate. Sara Gilbert was one of the first of Roseanne’s castmates to speak out on the issue and publicly come against Roseanne for her twitter joke.
It’s unclear whether Roseanne is completely gone for good or if there are other possible ways for the show to continue. Some in the public hope the show will get another revival only this time focused on Sara Gilbert’s character. There has been talk about killing off the lead character and changing the show’s name.
It was with tears in her eyes that Sara Gilbert discussed the situation on air and though she expressed great sorrow for those who suddenly lost their jobs, she explained that she supported ABC and believed pulling the show from the air was the right move.

“This show has always been about diversity, love and inclusion. And it’s sad to see it end in this way… However, I do stand behind the decision ABC made.”
The response to Sara Gilbert’s comments was supportive and indicated many people felt bad for her as well as her other cast members.
The Talk co-host Julie Chen quickly reiterated that canceling the show was the right thing to do.
“Canceling the show so quickly sent a strong message and the right message,” Chen said as others applauded.
The decision to pull the plug on Roseanne has stirred controversy nationwide. Some say that Roseanne was unfairly punished when other comedians often say inappropriate and even racist remarks.
Many have expressed approval of a Roseanne revival led by Sara Gilbert. The character Darlene has always been known for her sarcastic wit and personality.
What do you think? Would you watch a Roseanne reboot or revival that didn’t star Roseanne but Sara Gilbert instead?
