Spoiler alert — Asia O’Hara did not win the season finale of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” In fact. she didn’t get to battle it out in the last round because of a failed attempt to wow the judges.
If Asia O’Hara’s RuVeal, a big reveal during a lip-sync challenge, would have worked she would have no doubt made it to the final event and maybe even have won. However, the drag queen’s gag ended up gagging her.
If you didn’t see Thursday’s episode, the 35-year-old was dressed in a colorful butterfly look with hidden, live butterflies in her bracelets and fake boobs. Only when Asia went to release the insects — they were sleeping.
To make matters even worse, to audiences at home it had appeared that the bugs were dead. It goes without saying that the failed RuVeal not only caused her to lose but it also made her public enemy number one to animal activists.
The performer sat down with Entertainment Weekly to explain what exactly went wrong and assure people that the colored moths were alive and well.
Asia explained: “I used what are called Painted Lady butterflies, and going west across the continental divide, they have to be kept cool — basically in hibernation or asleep — so they don’t stress. They need to warm up to a certain temperature in order to fly away. I, of course, rehearsed it at home several times and it worked, but [the finale was] a different place and a different environment, and I don’t think the contraptions were warm enough to wake the butterflies up. But, as they warmed up in the stage lights during the break, they started to fly away!”
The VH1 star also mentioned that she has always been an advocate for the fair treatment of animals, donating money to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Dallas. This year, she and her friends will be volunteering 100 hours to the non-profit center.
Looking back, O’Hara does regret trying to go too far with the stunt that she pulled but didn’t regret seeing the other competitors in the top three.
