Rudy Giuliani may be part of President Trump’s legal team, but some are wondering which side he is actually on. In a new interview with NBC News’ Meet the Press with host Chuck Todd, Giuliani discussed the outcome of President Trump ending Mueller’s investigation. He stated that if he did so, he could face impeachment. He also stated that if the President were to give himself a pardon he’d likely face impeachment. Some across social media find Rudy Giuliani’s comments when asked about President Trump’s strategies questionable as many feel he shows less support for Trump and more for Democrats by his answers.
Though Giuliani pointed out that he never made the argument or held the position that President Trump has the legal, power of attorney to end an investigation into himself, he pointed out that such an action would lead to an impeachment.
Chuck Todd asked Giuliani for his specific opinion. Giuliani replied as follows.
“– I mean, it would — it could lead to impeachment it could lead to, I mean, if he terminated an investigation of himself it could lead to all sets of consequences.”
Rudy Giuliani also spoke at length explaining the amount of authority the justice department holds over President Trump as compared to Congress.
Giuliani explained the following.
“The Department of Justice is a creature of the president. I know based on presidential rulings, meaning the discretion of the president, Justice Department is given a certain amount of independence. I am tremendously in favor of that.
But that’s all the president’s decision. Now the president is, however, constrained both by the Congress’s impeachment power and the court’s ability to undo indictments or investigations that are unfair. I mean one of the possible remedies here is that this whole investigation may be totally illegitimate. That’s certainly something we reserve the right to raise. And a judge could determine that.”
