To be released in U.S. movie theaters mid December, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story anticipates an astounding $130 million debut. This unique movie is the first feature of Disney and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars’ spin-off series. It is predicted to be a prosperous anthology, perhaps even leading to numbers as high as those earned by the company’s 2015 film Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. For those fans who celebrated the long-awaited reboot, Rogue One will be a thrilling new adventure across the beloved Star Wars galaxy.
At the end of November, the movie’s launch was projected at $150 million dollars. Until The Force Awakens, it was unheard of for a December movie to launch higher than $85 million, with the exception of Avatar. Initially, the projection was closer to $120 million, but the most realistic figure came down to $130 million.
With director Gareth Edwards and leading actress Felicity Jones, Lucasfilm takes its first step into the brand new spin-off series, broadening the Star Wars universe forever. The film introduces a fresh cast of characters, whose stories take place before even the original saga. Following the Rebellion and its attempts to defeat Darth Vader, Rogue One gives us a glimpse of the events prior to Star Wars: Episode IV—A New Hope.
Disney’s main task now is to inform its audience that Rogue One and The Force Awakens are each unique films and should not be likened to one another. December of 2015, Force Awakens broke box office records with a local $248 million and global $2.07 billion, priding itself as the third-best launch after Avatar and Titanic.
During a seminar last September, Bob Iger—chairman of the Walt Disney Company—professed that Rogue One was not predicted to parallel the Force Awakens reboot. But he applauded this movie’s tactical methods of marketing and advertising. While the company has not anticipated as strong a launch as Force Awakens had, they aspire to keep interest levels equally as high.
Currently, Rogue One is projected to surpass such competitors as Warner Bros. Pictures’ Suicide Squad and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. If Rogue One proves to be a success, Disney will be soaring to the top. They are even contemplating a new marketing plan, with the use of $7 billion in global ticket sales.
