Riverdale star Lili Reinhart is on the cover of this month’s issue of Ocean Drive magazine, and the 21-year-old is opening up about everything from the complexities of Betty Cooper to her battle with depression. The young actress also reveals how important her boyfriend Cole Sprouse is on the set of the hit CW show.
In a People Magazine sneak preview of the in-depth interview, Reinhart says the fact that the 25-year-old Sprouse has been in the industry his whole life has made him a shoulder to lean on for the entire cast as they figure out how to navigate through their new life in the spotlight.
“He really brings us down to earth if we’re feeling like something we’ve said is being taken out of context,” she says.
Sprouse and his twin brother, Dylan, were child actors who starred in the film Big Daddy and the television show The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.
Now he plays Jughead Jones on Riverdale, and his experience in Hollywood is turning out to be a huge source of support for his castmates.
In her interview, Reinhart also talked about what she has in common with her character on the show, Betty Cooper, and she said that they both are multi-layered – the girl next door with a dark side.
Reinhart says that Betty is optimistic, even when she is going through difficult times, but there is a side filled with filled with anxiety and a dark alter ego. Reinhart says she relates most to the darkness, and she brings her real anxiety and stress when she plays the character.
The Cleveland native says that she fell into a depression the first time she moved to Los Angeles at the age of 18, and she had to move back home. But, she found the strength to go back and try again.
She says that she had to find her passion again because it had dwindled during her first few months in Hollywood. She wasn’t booking many gigs or making money, and she got to the point where she had trouble getting out of bed.
When she went back home, she saw a therapist for six months, and she realized that there wasn’t anything else that she wanted to do. She said she had to go back and try, instead of going to college to pursue a career she doesn’t care about.
Reinhart has been extremely candid about her mental health journey, and she decided to be so open because she struggled with it for so long. She says more people need to stand up and talk about the issue because it can be comforting for young people who are fighting their own battles.
She says fame hasn’t made her struggles disappear, and even though she has money in her bank account, an apartment, and friends, she still experiences depression. However, it’s not something to be ashamed of, and no one should ever have to justify how they feel.
Catch Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse on Riverdale, Wednesday nights on The CW.
