At the beginning of each episode of Real Housewives of New York, Sonja Morgan reminds fans during the opening credits that, “I’m more than just a name, I’m a legacy.” But, what exactly is that legacy? Throughout the show, Morgan has made numerous references to her ex-husband, John Adams Morgan, and one of the things he left her in their divorce was one of the most recognizable last names in American business history.
If the name Morgan rings a bell, that’s because John comes from a long line of famous ancestors. His father was Henry Sturgis Morgan, who co-founded Morgan Stanley. And his grandfather was the famous J.P. Morgan, who founded J.P. Morgan & Co.

But, he also has an impressive family tree on his mother’s side. She was Catherine Frances Lovering Adams, a direct descendant of two presidents – John Adams and John Quincy Adams.
According to OK! Magazine, John definitely came from great wealth. But the Long Island native opted to do his own thing by graduating from Yale and becoming an accomplished sailor, which led him to winning gold at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland.
He did, however, make a fortune in the family business of finance, and has an estimated net worth of $100 million.
Sonja isn’t shy when it comes to talking about her ex-husband’s financial success and famous family, but she does manage to keep quiet her and John’s surprising age difference. John is 87-years-old, while Sonja is 54 and was born ten years after his Olympic gold medal win.
John married two different women before Sonja. His first wife was Elizabeth Robbins Choate, and they had two children. Then, he married Tania Gross, and they had one child together before divorcing. After his marriage to Sonja – with whom he had daughter Quincy Adams Morgan –, John married Connie Morgan in 2010.
Sonja once told the New York Post that John proposed to her after just one date.
“He was relentless. And when he asked me out on a dinner date, finally, after he sent me a letter and flowers and chocolates, I said, ‘OK, let’s go to dinner.’ After the dinner, he proposed. He really loved me,” revealed the reality star.

When it comes to how their marriage ultimately came to an end, Sonja denied co-star Dorinda Medley’s claims that she cheated. Instead, she said that “There were some people I shouldn’t have trusted.”
Apparently, Morgan has been rubbing Medley the wrong way, despite their attempts to repair their friendship. Morgan struck a nerve when she compared her marriage to John with Medley’s late husband. The comparison offended Medley, and that led to her cheating accusations. Medley said that her husband died, while Sonja Morgan’s husband left her, so there is no comparison between the two.
