Real Housewives of Atlanta star Nene Leakes has been open with fans about her husband Gregg’s battle with colon cancer – both on social media and on the Bravo reality show. And, on the most recent RHOA episode, Nene and Gregg met with his oncologist and made an emotional decision.
Gregg, who is dealing with stage 3 colon cancer, recently had part of his colon removed, and he has opted for “holistic” cancer treatment instead of chemotherapy. The 63-year-old businessman made the difficult choice after undergoing a series of tests, including a CT scan, at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
“Chemo is not something that Gregg is thinking about doing at the moment. Obviously, we hear all the reports of people doing chemo and being very sick. So he feels like if there’s any other options that can take, I’d rather take those options and let chemo sit on the back burner for now,” Nene explained.
The couple was hoping to hear that chemotherapy wasn’t necessary, but that is not what Dr. Scott Kopetz told them. The tests showed that there was no evidence of cancer remaining in Gregg’s body, but he explained that there was still a big risk.
Dr. Kopetz explained that there are other areas of cancer that could still be in the body that they don’t know about. And, if they don’t do anything for those, it will grow back and show up as cancer. He then recommended that Gregg go through chemotherapy to try to reduce the risk of cancer coming back because the treatment can reduce the risk by about half.
When Gregg asked about alternative medicine, Dr. Kopetz said that none have been studied rigorously or have been found to be effective. However, he is supportive of patients who want to consider integrating holistic treatment, but he couldn’t recommend anything in lieu of chemotherapy.
Dr. Kopetz stressed that they shouldn’t lose sight of the big picture because Gregg’s cancer was something they can fight.
But, as People Magazine reports, Gregg stuck to his guns despite the doctor’s orders.
Gregg explained that if the cancer was more active, he would consider chemo a lot sooner. He has also decided to use his life as a mouthpiece for other people and to try to help someone. So, he can say “I’m Gregg Leakes, and I have cancer, but I will be a survivor.”
Nene agreed and said she is on the same page as her husband because they have watched chemo “destroy people.” She added that Gregg’s emotions are all over the place, and in this weak moment, he needs someone who is going to be strong.
Nene Leakes plans on being his rock because he has been hers for so many years.
