Renée Zellweger Dishes Playing Judy Garland And Oscar Buzz
Renée Zellweger is dishing on playing the legendary Judy Garland, as well as all the Oscar buzz surrounding her latest role.
Trying to fill the shoes and lungs of the legendary icon is an opportunity Zellweger still can't believe became hers. The Jerry McGuire star opened up to CBS Sunday Morning regarding what it was like to take on playing Garland.
"I was very curious why they sent it to me. She's considered one of the greatest vocal performers of all time, and I don't consider myself a vocalist," Zellweger explained to the outlet.
Garland's on-screen persona was larger than life. Her voice was legendary, and her acting talent was like no other. However, off-screen the Hollywood starlet struggled with the demons of fame, leading her to battle prescription pills, alcohol, divorce, and money problems.
"She's so fascinating that there was always one more thing I wanted to watch or read or learn about. She kept going. And that she still had that power in her voice. She just didn't quit," the actress revealed are only a few things she learned about Garland.
The film focuses on the end of Garland's life including her final performances at London's Talk of the Town nightclub. Garland was not at her best, and she did not go out on top.
"It contextualized a lot of the less-kind press that you would read about her in her later years. It wasn't just that this person was, you know a mess. That it's much more complicated and nuanced than that, as are most stories. As a person with a public persona, I've experienced a little bit of the things that are challenging when you live out that life. But not to that degree," Zellweger shared.
There is serious Oscar buzz surrounding Renée Zellweger's portrayal of Judy Garland, but the actress is unfazed by it all.
"I am happy that people seem to be touched by the film. That's what we had hoped," she said.
It doesn't matter to Zellweger if she is nominated for an award for playing Garland or not. She is merely thrilled the movie is generating so much chatter.
Judy hits theaters on Friday, September 27th, will you be checking out Zellweger as the legendary Hollywood icon, who is also the mom of singer Liza Minnelli?
