During an interview on Oprah Winfrey’s show, Reese Witherspoon opened up about her past in an abusive relationship. The 41-year-old actress said leaving her lousy romance was one of the decisions which prompted her to fulfill her destiny as the creator of an all-female media company as well as a prime facilitator of the Times Up initiative.
According to the Legally Blonde star, her relationship was “psychologically” and “verbally” abusive and there came a moment when she realized she had to leave.
Witherspoon said a boundary was violated by her ex and it was at that time when she came to know it was time to go, leaving her man behind forever.
The actress acknowledged the difficulty of the challenge, but Reese knew there was no turning back. Nevertheless, there is a silver lining to the story.
Witherspoon said it “was (a) profound” experience. As a result of the breakup, she became a much stronger as well as a different person. She changed at the “cellular level,” and the fact she “stood up for herself,” made a tremendous difference in her character.
Reese was joined by her fellow castmate, Mindy Kaling – formerly from The Office – and they both claimed they had dealt with similar relationships which prompted them to move on to a more significant purpose: the Times Up initiative.
Witherspoon said romantic partnerships are always tremendously tricky because a person’s self-esteem can be wrapped up in it.
The actress said she is now “ambitious” and “confident,” and someone had tried to take that away from her before, making it all the more important to her. And while it’s great she overcame adversity to become a better person, some people have criticized Reese’s conflation of psychological abuse with physical abuse, which is obviously very different from one another, with one being far more severe.
