Rami Malek won his first Golden Globe for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody and he’s giving credit where it is due. Not only did he pose for pictures with band members Brian May and Roger Taylor, but he also gave special recognition to band frontman Freddie Mercury during his acceptance speech. Malek stated he was beyond moved when he won best actor motion picture drama and began thanking those who helped his success.
Malek has three Golden Globe nominations and one win. He rose to critical acclaim for his work on USA’s Mr. Robot (which returns for a fourth and final season), but it was his role as Freddie Mercury that landed him the win.
Malek competed against John David Washington, Willem Dafoe, Bradley Cooper, and Lucas Hedges for the coveted honor.
During Rami’s winning speech, he recognized the excellent talents of the other nominees as well as those who brought Bohemian Rhapsody to completion.
When he thanked Queen, Malek looked over to the table where Brian May and Roger Taylor were seated. May blew him a kiss of gratitude and appreciation as both men became emotional at the win. Malek thanked them for ensuring that ‘authenticity and exclusivity’ existed not only in their music but in the world.
He concluded his speech with the shout out to Freddie Mercury.
“Thank you to Freddie Mercury, for giving me the joy of a lifetime. I love you, you beautiful man. This is for and because of you gorgeous.”
The crowd offered thunderous applause and cheered.
