Professional Skateboarder And Reality Star Bam Margera Reveals His Struggle With Bulimia
Bam Margera, legendary skateboarder and reality TV icon, revealed for the first time his struggle with the eating disorder, bulimia. In a new episode of Viceland's, Epicly Later'd, the skateboarder opened up regarding the debilitating illness he suffered during the height of his fame.
According to his parents, Phil and April Margera, when an individual is in front of cameras and the public spotlight, people "have a lot to say."
April explained her son always wanted a "very slim, lean look," and his condition began when he started his friendship with Ville Valo, the singer of the band, HIM.
When Bam and Ville became closer friends, Margera began to pick up on some of Valo's bad habits, one of them being his regular day drinking.
He said, "that was the first time I was introduced to day drinking." The reality star began to drink more and more as a means to avoid eating.
Slowly but surely, his behaviors started to resemble the ones typical of Bulimia Disorder. According to Margera's mother, "(Ville) is the loveliest man ever, but he never ate," he only drank.
It appeared as though Ville was a bad influence on Bam, as the reality fixture became encapsulated by the "rockstar lifestyle."
He didn't officially start drinking alcohol until he was 24 or 25-years-old. Once Bam was taking time off of skateboarding due to bone spurs, his alcohol consumption spiraled out of control, as his frequent nightclub visits - for which he was paid for - facilitated his bad habits.
However, since then, Bam has gotten over his terrible addictions and now lives in Spain with his wife, Nicole Boyd - who is currently expecting a baby!
Despite his recovery, April can't help but feel bothered by social media comments revolving around his weight to this day. She said, "I don't respond, but I feel like saying, 'He was drinking alcohol, and he was bulimic. And that's why he was thin.'"
