Production for Season 4 of Outlander is in full swing, and stars Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe recently took time out of their busy schedule to talk about their favorite moments from Season 3. Although Jamie and Claire’s reunion was a popular moment from last season, the actors had a different take on their favorite Season 3 scene.
The Outlander stars joined executive producers Ronald D. Moore, Matthew B. Roberts, Maril Davis and Toni Graphia to chat about last season during the Starz’s Outlander FYC Event, which took place in Hollywood’s Linwood Dunn Theater.
With the Season 3 DVD of Outlander available this month, Heughan revealed that his favorite part of the season was seeing Jamie discover a new identity after losing the one he loves.
According to Parade, the Outlander star revealed that he loved the scenes at the Battle of Culloden, which marks an important event in Scottish history. Jamie fully expected to die in the fight and had to really find himself after surviving the battle.
For Heughan, Jamie’s journey was a challenging but important development in Jamie’s story — and a lot of fun to portray in front of the cameras.
As far as Balfe is concerned, the actress admitted that Jamie and Claire’s reunion was a special moment, but, like Heughan, she liked the interactions between Claire and Frank (Tobias Menzies). In fact, Balfe felt like their complicated marriage was “beautiful to play” even though it had a tragic ending.
“But in the world of Claire and Frank, that feels like real life — not my real life, but it was just great to play because it’s just so tragic,” Balfe explained on the panel.
Balfe added that she thought Heughan’s scenes in the opening episode were also amazing. She noted that it was clear that Heughan has a personal connection with the historical battle and has been waiting a long time to play it out on the show.

Season 3 talk aside, new photos from the set of Season 4 reveal that more tragedy is ahead for Jamie and Claire. The images show crew members starting a fire inside one of the houses that was built on the set in Scotland.
We don’t know if the house belongs to Claire and Jamie, but it’s clear that the couple will face a lot of challenges as they start new lives in America next season.
Season 4 of Outlander is expected to premiere later in 2018.
