The cast and crew of Outlander just wrapped filming Season 4 in Ireland. While fans can’t wait for the new season to premiere this fall, Outlander stars Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe just got hit with a major disappointment in the awards department. Heughan and Balfe were both shunned by the Emmys and failed to receive a single nomination for Season 3.
Outlander has grown an impressive fan base over the years. But despite the enormous support, the cast members have been largely absent from the Emmys each and every year. Although many fans thought the actors brought their best in Season 3, Heughan and Balfe failed to win a nomination across the board.
Instead, the bulk of nominations went to HBO’s insanely popular Game of Thrones series while Netflix’s show, The Crown, received a lot as well.
Although Heughan and Balfe were snubbed once again, it wasn’t a complete loss for Outlander. According to Express, the series received one nomination in the costume department. Terry Dresbach runs the costume department for Outlander and took home a nomination for the design work in episode 5 of Season 3, “Freedom and Whisky.”
The installment featured Claire’s (Balfe) famous “bat-suit” and other items from the 1960s. The time-traveling surgeon designed the outfit to get her back to the 1700s in one piece.
After hearing the bad news about the Emmys, many fans took out their frustrations on social media. In fact, many fans thought Heughan and Balfe both deserved to win nominations for their portrayals of Jamie and Claire Fraser in Season 3.
Some fans even started to question the legitimacy of the Emmys, especially considering how Heughan and Balfe always seem to get overlooked. Given the popularity of the series, it does seem a little odd that it only took home one nomination this year.
“Well deserved, but what about other category nominations – Best Actor, Actress and Series! @SamHeughan deserves to win, let alone be nominated!” one fan wrote on Twitter.
While fans were clearly disappointed by the news, the cast of Outlander thanked the costume department for their wonderful work on the show. Heughan and Balfe praised the costume team on social media for doing outstanding work with their characters while Sophie Skelton gave a shout out for the nomination as well. Here’s to hoping they all do better next year.
Season 4 of Outlander is scheduled to premiere on Starz this November.
