Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe are spilling more Outlander secrets ahead of the Season 4 premiere. The pair appeared alongside co-stars and producers at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival over the weekend, where they opened up about this season’s steamy sex scenes between Jamie and Claire.
Balfe and Heughan were joined by Richard Rankin, Sophie Skelton and John Bell at the event. The topics of conversation varied from Brianna and Roger’s romance to Jamie and Claire’s sex scenes this season. When it comes to acting out the scenes, Balfe revealed that everything is choreographed, and the actors have little to no wiggle room to freestyle.
“We do not have carte blanche at all,” Balfe shared. “There’s scripts and you have to follow what’s in the script, but there’s always a discussion.”
According to Entertainment Weekly, Balfe also explained how every sex scene on the show has a purpose. All of the actors discuss the scripts ahead of filming and talk about how the romantic scenes further the plot.
Although there is a lot of sex on Outlander, Balfe assured fans that they are not making “soft-core porn.” When they do have a sex scene, it has to move the characters forward or inform the audience about the character’s journey in some way.
Apart from Jamie and Claire’s epic romps, Skelton talked a little about Brianna and Roger’s romance this season. Skelton revealed that Season 4 will begin with Roger and Brianna in a long-distance relationship while she attends MIT.
Skelton teased that the pair will experience a few hurdles before possibly reuniting later in the season. Brianna, of course, will be traveling back in time to reunite with her parents, so it will be interesting to see how that fits in with her relationship with Roger.
In addition to discussing what is ahead, the cast and crew also took part in a screening for the opening episode of the new season.
Season 4 of Outlander kicks off Nov. 4 on Starz.
