HBO’s Game of Thrones has catapulted many unknown actors into stardom, but heartthrob Sam Heughan is not one of them. It turns out the Scottish star of Outlander auditioned for GOT seven times, but could never land a role.
According to The Express Heughan admitted, “I auditioned for Renly, Loras, some of the members of the Night’s Watch. And, I’d always get so close! I’d be like, ‘Guys, just give me a sword!’ Everyone was going in for those parts.”
But, Outlander fans are happy things didn’t work out for Heughan at HBO, because they have loved watching him star as Jamie Fraser, and they can’t get enough of him steaming up the screen with Caitriona Balfe (Claire Fraser).
The actor says that he even though he was disappointed by not scoring a part on Game of Thrones, the rejection helped him hone his audition technique, and the more experience he got with the process ended up giving him confidence.
Heughan says that when he found Jamie he felt a connection with him and he knew the part was different. He says something just felt right because he knew the character.
When he’s not on set, Heughan stays in shape with various workouts, including running marathons. This past weekend, he joined 6,000 other Scots as they participated in the Stirling marathon to raise money for the cancer charity Cahonas Scotland, and he ran his personal best by finishing the 26.2 miles in just over three hours.
The 37-year-old took to Twitter and shared a picture of himself alongside other runners before the race began, and captioned it with “Is it too late to go back to bed? Wish us luck!”
Fans who are familiar with Heughan’s My Peak Challenge well-being campaign – which encourages members to raise money for Bloodwise by improving their own lives with health and fitness goals – know that the actor has a strict exercise regime, and his three hour and fifteen-minute marathon time wasn’t a surprise.
Just found out I was 97th in the Marathon (6000+ people)! A great PB 3.13.. here’s to the next in Edinburgh! @mypeakchallenge @cahonasscotland Thank you for all the support along the way, Peakers, Outlander fans, the friendly volunteers, cheers of encouragement and of course the bagpipes!! What a beautiful run (minus the hill at the end!) Thank you Stirling!!x
Heughan has already raised over $22,000 for Cahonas Scotland, a charity dedicated to raising money for men suffering from prostate and testicular cancer. They also launched a crowdfunding page on behalf of the actor’s marathon efforts.
A-list celebrities and Outlander co-stars like Balfe are now looking to Heughan for fitness and training inspiration, and he thanked everyone for their words of encouragement. Fans from across the globe wished him luck on Twitter, while locals took the opportunity to get a quick pic of the star running through Stirling.
Sam Heughan returns for Season 4 of Outlander later this fall on Starz.
