Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser (Duncan Lacroix) has been missing in action since mid-way through Season 3 of Outlander. We are almost halfway through Season 4, yet everyone’s favorite Scot has yet to cross paths with Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe).
Both Diana Gabaldon and executive producer Ronald D. Moore have promised that we have not seen the last of Murtagh. When will he return to Outlander?
Murtagh’s journey on the show is significantly different from his story in Gabaldon’s books. In the novels, Murtagh dies in the Battle of Culloden. On the show, he survives the battle and is sent to live out his days at Ardsmuir prison.

Jamie and Murtagh reunited at Ardsmuir in Season 2. As fans will recall, Jamie helped a sick Murtagh recover in the prison, strengthening their bond even further.
Once the prison shut down, Murtagh was sent to the American colonies while Jamie was shipped off to work at the Helwater estate.
According to TV Insider, Moore kept Murtagh alive because the character had become more important on the show than in the books. After Murtagh learned the truth about Claire in Season 2, Moore felt like he became a part of the family and could not let him die.
Moore did not give a solid date when Murtagh will return. Gabaldon, however, assured fans during an online Q&A that he will be back in action at some point.
After praising Duncan for his portrayal of Murtagh, Gabaldon wrote, “Obviously, you don’t just reveal that he’s alive in episode 303 and then never refer to him again…”
The Outlander author added that they are not sure how to bring Murtagh back, but he will return to the show in the near future. With Jamie and Claire setting up new lives in American this season, we can only hope their reunion happens sooner rather than later.
New episodes of Outlander air Sunday nights on Starz.
