Sam Heughan got his big break in 2013 when he landed the role of Jamie Fraser in the time-travel series Outlander, and five years later the show’s popularity has resulted in boosting a nation’s economy as well as the lead actor’s bank account. Scotland has credited the Outlander effect as the reason that, for the first time ever, over five million people flocked to the nation’s historic sites in the past year. Those sites are also Outlander filming locations.
Heughan has also profited with both fame and fortune. According to The Scotsman, his company, Cairn Mor Creative, posted earnings of nearly $1 million this past year, up from just over $100,000 the year before. The 38-year-old set up the company after he shot the first season of the Starz drama.
He also founded the My Peak Challenge movement, where thousands of members follow a fitness program and raise money for Bloodwise, a charity that funds blood cancer research.

Life is good for Heughan, who just celebrated his 38th birthday late last month. And, he marked the occasion by engaging in some on-set shenanigans with his co-star Caitriona Balfe. In the photos they shared on social media, things got pretty silly as they revealed how Balfe got her glamorous 1960s eye makeup.
One pic showed Balfe sitting in a makeup chair with her eyes mascara-ed shut while Heughan ran around shirtless. Then Balfe posted tweet after tweet wishing Heughan a happy birthday while poking fun of him at the same time – including one with Heughan’s head photoshopped onto Balfe’s body from Outlander’s season one wedding episode.
Another photo showed the two goofing off on set, while a third featured Heughan wearing a ton of dark eye makeup.
The two appear to have a good time together and have such a good sense of humor, that fans are starting a campaign for Heughan and Balfe to host the premiere of Saturday Night Live next season. They think it is a good idea for a number of reasons, including the fact that it would give him a chance to promote his new movie The Spy Who Dumped Me.
SNL star Kate McKinnon also stars in the movie, so Heughan’s chances may increase because of their working relationship. Hosting the SNL premiere this September would also be good for Heughan timing-wise because it would be in-between the shooting schedules for season four and five.
Outlander will return for season four later this year, but Starz has yet to reveal a premiere date. Meanwhile, Sam Heughan can be seen in The Spy Who Dumped Me August 3rd.
