The new Avengers film is crushing at the box office. The latest installment, Infinity War, pulled in around $250 million, making it one of the best opening weekends of all time. The numbers aren’t official yet, but if the estimations are correct, it will be the highest grossing opening weekend ever.
Other films close to the revenue of latest Avengers flick include Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Interestingly enough, all three of the movies are Disney-created.
Moreover, the vast majority of record-breaking films at the box office are either Marvel movies or Disney. According to reports, Infinity War has steadily drawn big numbers including on Thursday: $39 million in preview ticket sales.
On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the movie made $106 million, $83 million, and $61 million, respectively. As you may know, the Iron Man and Avengers movies shot Robert Downey Junior’s career into the stratosphere for the second time in his life.
Not only do the films perform tremendously at the domestic box office, but notably, they do well in China. Black Panther for instance and Infinity War both did very well in Asian countries.
The recent success of comic book movies has cultural enthusiasts thinking that we’ll continue to see adaptions such as these ones. The transition has even been made in television, with shows like The Walking Dead, also based on a comic book series, among others.
Marvel’s run at making movies has been so successful, that when taking into account every movie they’ve made over the past ten years, 19 in total, they’ve generated $15.39 billion.
It looks like movie theaters will last a little bit longer yet. Some have speculated the fall of theaters is on the horizon, considering the rise of streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, and CraveTV, in addition to YouTube.
