Nene Leakes came under fire for a joke made in poor taste while she was a part of the Xscape tour last year. In the upcoming episode of “Real Housewives of Atlanta,” we get to see her deal with the fallout from her horrible decision.
In the preview, Nene explains her side of the story to Cynthia Bailey and Marlo Hampton.
She tells them that she was telling a joke about Uber. She then goes on to say that she didn’t know that Uber originated in the Bay Area where she was performing and there were a lot of Uber people in the audience.
The 50-year-old actress goes on to say that the woman in the audience told her to kill herself. Without thinking, that’s when she delivered the controversial “I hope you get raped by an Uber driver” line that set the internet abuzz.
Leakes breaks down to her co-stars: “I did [apologize]. Everybody is on my case. For a person to tell me to kill myself. That don’t even make sense.”
She goes on to say in confessional: “The problem is that you see red all of a sudden. And I know that it can go somewhere so quick. And you did not even mean for it to go there.”
The comment brought up a conversation of whether it was just a joke or if it was not okay to say at all — regardless of the environment. Since it went down near the start of the #metoo and #timesup movements, Nene couldn’t have picked a worse date to say it.
Many “RHOA” fans feel that Nene is a hypocrite for saying what she did because she’s a sexual assault survivor herself. She’s been open about it in the past.
Do you think that Nene is sincerely sorry for what happened? Were people too hard on her?
