When Morgan Freeman went up on stage to get his Lifetime Achievement Award at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, many people expected a beautiful speech from the legendary actor, who has become known for his attitude and calm demeanor.
And yet, a surprising comment was dropped by Freeman, who took the opportunity to discuss the award statuettes.
The iconic Hollywood figure stated: “Oh and one more thing. I was not going to do this. I am going to tell you what’s wrong with this statue. It works from the back…from the front, it is gender-specific.”
He added: “Maybe I started something.”
The remark actually came as Freeman was wrapping up his speech, but he took the time to point out that he sees the statuettes as too gender-specific, something he does not approve of.
Some would expect a comment like that to generate a lot of negativity, but one should keep in mind that Mr. Freeman has a solid standing in the industry with a large fan base that regularly approves of his stances.
With that concept in mind, it should come as no surprise that his comment about the statuettes was actually the main talking point for many people after the awards ceremony was over, and Freeman had managed to generate a lot of hype over the Internet with what he said.
The movie star himself seemed well aware of what he was doing too, as he made a reference to that in his speech. It would be interesting to follow the situation as it unfolds now and to see if he will manage to have any impact on the awards in the future.
It is likely that the organizers would prefer to sweep his comment under the rug and keep the show going unless they received too much backlash though.
Freeman has been everywhere in the past few weeks and found effective ways to grab headlines. He also went viral thanks to a Super Bowl LII ad for Doritos in which he is rapping Missy Elliott lyrics.
At 80, The Dark Knight actor is on top of his game and in touch with the new generation.
