Michelle Williams is opening up what it’s like living with depression. The singer recalled one of her toughest moments which millions of people witnessed without even knowing it.
Earlier this year, Beyonce pulled off one of the best surprises in music history when she called on ex-group members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Willians to join her on stage at Coachella. The girls didn’t miss a beat when performing some of their greatest hits as the huge crowd cheered them on in person and millions watched in amazement at home via live stream.
Little did viewers know that Williams was forcing herself to push through a serious bout of depression.
The gospel artist revealed that the preparation took quite a while when she said: “The entire year we were rehearsing every day for hours. I was burying it, and before you knew it, I was looking up out of the pit like, Oh my God.”
At one point, the “Say Yes” singer called off her engagement to fiance Chad Johnson merely hours before checking into a mental health facility that she documented on social media.
“I thought I was over depression. I thought, ‘I’m good!’ I’ve got love, I’m working out. But I was so angry. The rage built up in me. I did not attempt suicide, but I was questioning [life]. I’d been there before in that darkness. I was like ‘No, you better go [to the hospital].’ By the time I got there, I was stable.”
She would have understood if the love of her life had broken things off with her but luckily — Johnson remained by her side.
Williams is working on dealing with her illness every day. She’s also committed to removing the stigma revolved around suffering from depression, anxiety, and more,
Chad and Michelle are currently filming their new reality show. It will premiere on OWN next Saturday.
