Michael Alig’s release from prison wasn’t without controversy either. Many people on social media were furious when Alig and Ernie Glam, host of the web-podcast Pee-ew had Desmond is Amazing, the young child drag queen on their show. Desmond was snuggled between the two men on the episode and people feared for Desmond’s safety. Concerned citizens noticed the wall-art that hung overhead the trio that showed an image of children’s feet with the word ‘Rohypnol’ painted on the image. Rohypnol is a date-rape drug.
Michael Alig was outspoken about his heroin addiction and serving 17 years in prison for a murder that partially stemmed from drugs wasn’t enough to stop his addiction.
Speaking to Rolling Stone magazine in 2017, Michael Alig stated the following.
I went to prison addicted to heroin and it’s a very difficult drug to get off — especially in prison. I would wean myself off, go through the withdrawal, and expect to be feeling better a week or a month later. And when that didn’t happen, I decided, ‘F**ck it. I’ve committed this horrible crime, nobody’s ever going to forgive me, I might as well just get high and not have to deal with it.’
Michael Alig was born on April 29, 1966. He died on December 25, 2020.
